Blindfolded First Line Challenge

Today I am going to be guessing book titles based on the first lines! I will be blindfolded, and my boyfriend will be reading me the first lines. I have wanted to do this for so long, but I always thought I couldn’t do it without a booktube channel, or that no one would want to see that in a blog post. But I have decided to just go for it and hope it doesn’t flop. (Although I am still considering starting a booktube channel..maybe?)

So we are going to do 10 different books, and see how well I do. He gets to choose from all the books on my shelves, but I haven’t read them all, so this should be interesting! ๐Ÿ˜…

#1
First Line: “Jude lifted the heavy practice sword, moving into first stance- readiness.”
My Guess: The Wicked King by Holly Black
Correct Answer: The Wicked King by Holly Black

As soon as he started reading I had a huge smile on my face because I knew without a doubt it was The Wicked King. He knows this is one of my favorite books, so I guess he wanted me to start off easy. I’ll take that point, because it was pretty much downhill after this.

#2
First Line: “I hate having to dress like a man.”
My Guess: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Correct Answer: Daughter of The Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

I have never read Shatter Me, and had no idea if she dressed like a man. I just couldn’t think of which book started like this, or even had a woman who wore mens clothing, so I went with one I hadn’t read yet that I knew was about a female. I have read Daughter of the Pirate King, and did not remember that she did have to dress like a man in the beginning. Whoops.

#3
First Line: “I’ve been locked up for 264 days”
My Guess: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Correct Answer: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

He thought he was so funny picking this one, and he for sure thought I wouldn’t guess Shatter Me again. The one thing I knew about this book is that the main character is imprisoned by the government, and I also knew I didn’t have any other books like this.

#4
First Line: “Prague, Early May.”
Second Line: “The Sky weighed gray over fairy-tale rooftops, and all the world was watching.”
My Guess: Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes
Correct Answer: Days of Blood & Starlight by Lani Taylor

Well here are two more books I have not read… I promise I have read over half of the books on my shelf. I think he is intentionally trying to trick me, or I just suck! I had to get the second line, because I really had zero clue.

#5
First Line: “Vlad Dracul’s heavy brow descended like a storm when the doctor informed him that his wife had given birth to a girl.”
My Guess: And I Darken by Kiersten White
Correct Answer: And I Darken by Kiersten White

I guessed this super quick because I just read this a couple weeks ago and it’s still fresh in the memory. He was super bummed because he thought it would be a tough one for.

#6
First Line: “Wind howled through the night, carrying a scent that would change the world.”
Second line: “A tall Shade lifted his head and sniffed the air.”
My Guess: Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Correct Answer: Eragon by Christopher Paolini

The first line had me a bit stumped, but after the second line and the mention of a shade I was fairly certain it was Eragon. I had a moment when I thought they might be called shades in Circle of Shadows, but since I haven’t read that yet I went with my first guess. Always go with your gut folks.

#7
First Line: “My big brother reaches home in the dark hours before dawn, when even the ghosts take their rest.”
My Guess: The Black Witch by Laurie Forest
Correct Answer: An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

I honestly had no clue, so I randomly picked a book I hadn’t read yet.

#8
First Line: “They always screamed.”
My Guess: Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye
Correct Answer: Reboot by Amy Tintera

It has been so many years since I read Reboot, I forgot I owned it. I thought Circle of Shadows was about assassins, so screaming seemed possible? I obviously need to read this damn book.

#9
First Line: “We must, by law, keep a record of the innocents we kill.”
My Guess: Scythe by Neal Shusterman
Correct Answer: Scythe by Neal Shusterman

That was too easy.

#10
First Line: “The woods are beautiful.”
Me: Ok it’s Ever the Hunted or A Court of Thorns and Roses. Actually just give me the second line to be sure.
Second Line: “They’re my friends, the trees, and I can feel them smiling down at me.”
Me: Oh, never mind that’s The Black Witch.
My Final Guess: The Black Witch by Laurie Forest
Correct Answer: The Black Witch by Laurie forest

SOOO 6 out of 10 ain’t half bad. No but literally I was one away from only getting half of them right… But, I am actually pretty satisfied with myself. I did better than I expected I would.
Honestly though it was just a lot of fun doing this challenge and getting to spend some time with my boyfriend doing something bookish. I hope you enjoyed this and it didn’t totally suck. Thank you and Happy Reading ๐Ÿ–ค
